What it is

Three lengths, each a complete description. Please keep the facts as they are: the Workspace is free, and saving from the other tools, and the three larger applications, are paid.

About 50 characters

Private tools that run entirely in your browser.

About 160 characters

Documents, spreadsheets, slides and hundreds of single-purpose tools that run in your browser tab. Nothing you open is uploaded, and there is no account.

About 400 characters

OBSCURA OS is a set of working tools that run entirely in the browser. The Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Notes, a PDF editor and five more apps) is free, with no account. Hundreds of single tools each do one job, such as redacting a PDF or stripping a photo of its location: free to use, with saving the result part of OBSCURA Pro. Files are opened in the tab and never uploaded.

How to check the claim

Every page here says nothing you open is uploaded. A reviewer should not take that on trust, and does not have to. /verify sets out the whole method; in short:

  1. Open the browser's developer tools on the Network tab, with the log preserved.
  2. Use a tool with a real file of some size, such as SEAL or X-RAY, and sort the requests by size. The page and its code come down; the file does not go up. The only requests back to the site are its page count, about sixty bytes each, which /verify describes field by field.
  3. Read the Content-Security-Policy header on any page. It limits where the page may send anything, and the browser enforces it, whatever the code says. /verify explains each line, including the one outside host it permits.
  4. Load a tool, turn off the network, and use it anyway.

There has been no third-party audit, and nothing here is a certification. It is evidence anybody can gather in a few minutes.

Brand

The mark is a cube, three faces of one colour lit from above. The wordmark sets it beside OBSCURA OS in Source Sans 3 Bold. The tagline is Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. It is the promise every product here rests on, and anybody can check it (/verify).

Logo files

wordmark.svg is the source of both wordmarks: the letters as outlines, which take the colour of the text around them when the file is placed in a page.

Clear space and size

Leave clear space round the wordmark at least the width of the mark's side face, half the mark's width, on every side. The wordmark is never set smaller than 16px tall on a screen or 5mm in print; below that, use the mark alone, which holds to 12px. The mark and the name keep the proportions of the files: the mark as tall as the capitals, 8 units of the mark's 24 between them.

Colours

The site's own tokens, from theme.css. The mark takes the accent of whichever colourway and mode is showing.

Type

Source Sans 3 for the interface and the wordmark, Source Serif 4 for headlines, and the system's monospace for figures, codes and keys. Both faces are served from this site, not from a font service.

Product names

Every product is called OBSCURA and its name, written as below, in a title, a heading, a card or a sentence that introduces it. Where OBSCURA is already on screen (the bar, a tile, the second mention in a paragraph) the short name is enough. The suites are families of tools and have a name of their own.

The family icons

Every product and suite has an icon in one family: the cube, lit from above in the product's own hue, on a dark field, with the product's mark on a plate in front of it where there is room to read one. Each page shows its family's icon in the tab and on a home screen. They are drawn from one template (brand.mjs) and never by hand.

Do, and do not

  • Do use the files as they are, on a background they were made for.
  • Do write OBSCURA in capitals, and the product after it as written above.
  • Do not redraw the mark, turn it, outline it, put a shadow or a gradient on it, or set the name in another face.
  • Do not put the light wordmark on a dark background, or either on a photograph that fights it.
  • Do not write "Obscura", "ObscuraOS" or "OBSCURA Os", or add a word such as Secure or Private to the name.
  • Do not use the mark in a way that suggests we endorse or make something we do not.

Pictures

Taken from the applications as they are today, 1440 by 900 pixels. Smaller copies, 800 pixels wide, are beside each one with -800 in the name.

Every page on the site also has its own share picture, 1200 by 630, at /og/ followed by the page's address and .jpg: /og/index.jpg for the front door, /og/workspace.jpg for the Workspace.
