On an iPhone, the Notes app and the Files app both scan documents to PDF, free and with no account. On Android, the Google Drive app has a scanner, as do many phone makers’ camera apps. If you want a dedicated app without an account, Genius Scan does its processing on the phone. And for a scan on any device without installing anything, FLATBED turns photos of pages into a squared-up, cleaned PDF in the browser tab, with the photos kept on your own device. What you give up against CamScanner is its cloud, its OCR and its folder of past scans.

Why people leave CamScanner

  • The watermark. Pages exported from the free version carry a small CamScanner stamp; the paid plan removes it.
  • The account and the cloud. CamScanner asks you to sign up and offers to sync scans to its own servers. For identity documents, payslips and medical letters, many people would rather the scans went nowhere.
  • The 2019 incident. In August 2019 Kaspersky reported that versions of the Android app released between mid-June and late July 2019 contained a malicious module, Trojan-Dropper.AndroidOS.Necro.n, inside an advertising library. Google removed the app from the Play Store; the developer removed the library and the app returned. Kaspersky credited the developer’s response. It is fairly described as a supply-chain problem in an advertising component, fixed within weeks, not as the app being malware by design.
  • India’s ban. CamScanner was among the 59 apps India’s government blocked in June 2020 on national security grounds, and it remains blocked there.

The scanner you already have

For most people, most of the time, Notes or Files on an iPhone is the whole answer: it is free, it is already there, and the scan stays on the phone until you send it.

Dedicated apps without an account

Genius Scan, from The Grizzly Labs, works without an account and does its page detection, correction and PDF building on the phone; its paid tier adds OCR and sync. OpenScan is an open-source scanner for Android with no account and no advertising. Both are worth trying if you scan a lot and want more control over batches, file names and exports than the built-in scanners give.

Scanning in a browser tab

FLATBED is for when you do not want to install anything: a borrowed laptop, a work computer you cannot add apps to, or photos of pages you have already taken. It uses the device’s camera in the tab, or photos you drop in, several at once, in page order. For each photo it finds the page, lets you drag or nudge a corner that it placed wrongly, flattens the page as if it had been on a scanner’s glass, divides out the shadow your hand or phone cast, and sets it on A4, US Letter or the page’s own shape, in colour, grey, or black and white like a photocopier. The pages become one PDF. The photos are processed on your own device and not uploaded.

What it does not do: read the text. The PDF is pictures of pages, like the output of a basic scanner. OPTIC reads the words from a scanned page if you need to search or copy them. It keeps no library of past scans either; the PDF is yours to file.

Taking and adjusting the pages is free. Saving the PDF is part of OBSCURA Pro, or US$2 to save from one tool for a day.

Questions people ask about A CamScanner alternative with no account and no app

What is a good free alternative to CamScanner?

On an iPhone, the Notes and Files apps scan to PDF with no account. On Android, Google Drive has a scanner. Genius Scan works without an account, and FLATBED scans to PDF in a browser tab with nothing installed.

Is CamScanner safe to use now?

In 2019 Kaspersky found a malicious module in an advertising library in some Android versions; it was removed and the app returned to Google Play. The remaining concerns are the account, the cloud sync and the watermark, and whether you want scans of personal documents in a third party's app.

Does iPhone have a built-in document scanner?

Yes. In Notes, Scan Documents from the camera or attachment button, and in Files, Scan Documents from the three-dot menu. Both save PDFs.

Can I scan a document to PDF without an app?

Yes. FLATBED uses the camera or your photos in the browser, finds and flattens each page, and makes a PDF. The photos are processed on your device.

Why does CamScanner add a watermark?

The free version stamps exported pages; the paid plan removes it. Built-in scanners and many other apps add none.

Is CamScanner banned in India?

Yes. It was among 59 apps blocked by India's government in June 2020.
