Workbench
Put the file down first. The right tool comes to you.
The workbench starts from the file instead of the tool. Drop in a PDF, a photo, a spreadsheet or anything else, and it works out what kind of file it is and offers the OBSCURA tools that can open, check, clean or convert it. Send the file to one and carry on from there. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded, so it is a safe first stop for a document you have not opened yet.
This browser cannot hold a file between pages
The workbench moves a file from one tool to the next through this browser's own storage. That storage is switched off here, which usually means private browsing or a setting that blocks site data. Every tool still works on its own: open the one you want and choose the file there.
Put a file down
Nothing is uploaded. The file is read here, on this machine, to work out what it is.
That file could not be handed over, so nothing was moved. Open the tool directly and choose the file there.
On the workbench
Pick one to see what can be done with it. Anything a tool hands back lands here too, so the next step starts from the result rather than from the original.
What you can do here
Put a file down and this becomes the list of tools that will take it. Until then, here is everything, by what it is for.
