Whether there is room below you to be caught FALL
A two metre lanyard needs about six and three quarter metres of clear space beneath it. Clipped at foot level, over eight. A scaffold lift is two.
The system
A negative anchor height means clipping below the D-ring, which doubles the free fall and is the single most common way a correctly worn harness stops working.
The space, and the figures in the stack
What it comes to
The working
EN 355 and EN 363, with the ANSI Z359 figures offered. Arithmetic against published figures, not a rescue plan and not a competent person.
How it works
FALL checks whether there is enough clear space below someone working at height for a fall arrest system to stop them before they hit something. A lanyard needs far more clearance than its own length, and more again when it is clipped at foot level or to one side. Enter the lanyard, the anchor position and what is below, and it works out the clearance needed. Use it alongside the manufacturer's figures.
