When the last vehicle actually gets there CONVOY
Thirty vehicles fifty metres apart occupy 1,660 metres of road and take two and a half minutes to pass a point. The tail does not arrive when the head does.
The move
The serials
Gap is between vehicles, nose to tail. Then wait is the minutes between one serial’s last vehicle clearing the start point and the next serial’s first vehicle crossing it.
The table
The march graph
Time across, distance up. The solid line is the head of each serial and the dashed line is its tail; where two bands overlap, two serials are on the same stretch of road at the same time.
The working
How it works
CONVOY works out how long a line of vehicles really takes. A column of vehicles spaced out on the road is far longer than it looks and takes minutes to pass a single point, so the last vehicle arrives well after the first. Enter the vehicles, spacing and speed, and it gives the column length, pass time and when the tail arrives. The figures stay in this tab.
