Pages in the order a folded booklet reads BOOKLET
To make an eight-page booklet, the first sheet carries page eight and page one on one side. Nobody works that out at a printer at five o’clock.

How it should fold
A long document folded as one booklet has a spine hundreds of sheets thick and will not close. Signatures are how a real book is made: fold each one separately, then stack them.
What it works out to
Print it double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Flipping on the long edge turns every other sheet upside down, which is the other half of why this goes wrong.
How it works
Printing a booklet means putting pages on each sheet in an order nobody wants to work out by hand: on an eight-page booklet, the first sheet carries page eight beside page one. BOOKLET reorders a PDF into that imposed order, adds blank pages to make the count a multiple of four, splits long documents into signatures, and reminds you to flip on the short edge, the usual reason home-printed booklets come out wrong. The file stays on your machine.
